Here’s a question for the coffee lovers out there: Would you rather skip your morning shower or your morning coffee?

Hmmm…tough one!

As Americans, we prize our java so much that we at Cupa Cabana were inspired to uncover some preferences and statistics about our coffee consumption as a nation. In our investigation, we found some intriguing tidbits about our obsession.

Including the question above. The Huffington Post gets credit for researching that one.

Coffee or Shower: Which Would You Skip?

The answer?

Well, more than half of respondents opted to skip a shower versus skipping their coffee. And we understand that choice!

How Much Coffee Do Americans Drink?

Some basic stats focus on the amount of coffee we drink and how we drink it.

Here are notable numbers:

  • The average American drinks about 3.1 cups per day.
  • Nearly 2 out of 3 adults drink coffee every day.
  • More than 1 out of 3 coffee drinkers take it black.

As enthusiastic as we are about coffee, the U.S. is not even close to holding the top spot among coffee-drinking countries. That distinction goes to Finland, whose residents drink 26.5 pounds of coffee per year per person.

By comparison, the U.S. clocks in at around 7 pounds of coffee per person, which makes Finland’s number even more impressive. We salute the Finns for their unparalleled dedication to our favorite beverage!

Coffee Consumption by Different Age Groups

Other stats we found focus on the age breakdown of coffee consumers.

For instance, nearly 3 out of 4 Americans age 55 and over drink coffee daily. Seniors are the leading coffee-drinking age group by far.

And what about the millennials?

Nearly half of them drink gourmet coffees, which puts them ahead of all other age groups.

You know, Millennials sometimes get a bad rap, but we think they are smart about that choice!

In the end, these stats prove what we already knew: Americans are devoted coffee fans. And we couldn’t agree more.
